Lufthansa flies off with bmi stake

Done deals

  • German flag carrier Lufthansa has acquired a controlling stake in UK airline bmi from chairman Sir Michael Bishop in a deal worth €400 million (£316 million). Lufthansa now owns 80 per cent of bmi and is expected to make a bid for the remaining 20 per cent owned by Scandinavian Airlines
  • Jackson Keay, a provider of gas cylinder retest and inspection services, is set to acquire the trading assets of APS Cellar Gas, a provider of bottled gas to the East Midlands, in an undisclosed deal backed by Royal Bank of Scotland
  • Giles Insurance Brokers has acquired smaller rival Dickson Insurance Brokers from its founder for an undisclosed amount. Commercial broker Giles is owned by UK private equity firm Charterhouse
  • Global private equity firm HIG Capital LLC has acquired Petroferm Inc, a specialty chemicals company, through one of its portfolio companies, HIG Chemicals Holdings Corp. The acquisition includes Petroferm’s operations in the US. Petroferm’s UK division, Joseph Storey & Co, will be spun off to Petroferm shareholders
  • GlaxoSmithKline has agreed to acquire Genelabs Technologies Inc for $57 million (£35 million) in a $1.30 per share cash offer

In the pipeline

  • Australia's AGL Energy has agreed to sell its oil and gas assets in Papua New Guinea for US$800 million (£483 million) to an unnamed international oil and gas company
  • PepsiCo has agreed to acquire Spitz International Inc, a producer of sunflower and pumpkin seeds in Canada, for undisclosed terms
  • Furukawa-Sky Aluminium Corp, a Japanese producer of rolled aluminium products, will take a 25 per cent stake in British counterpart Bridgnorth Aluminium by year's end. The details of the transaction have not been revealed
