Christie's acquires art gallery

Famous auction house Christie’s International has become part of the primary art market after acquiring art gallery Haunch of Venison for an undisclosed sum.

Haunch of Venison was founded in 2002 by Harry Blain and Graham Southern, who will continue running the company. They will be joined by Barrett White, director for the American US of the business.

A spokeswoman for Haunch of Venison told M&ADeals that the company will operate independently to New York-based Christie’s, with no integration between the two. She added that Blain and Southern’s roles remain unaffected by the takeover.

Haunch of Venison specialises in the work of post-war and contemporary artists including Keith Tyson and Wim Wenders. Based in London, the gallery also operates in Zurich and Berlin.

Christie’s is expected to open a Haunch of Venison gallery in New York in late 2007. In 2006, Christie’s global art sales were worth £2.51 billion, up 36% compared with 2005.
