A Belfast-based private equity group has bought one of Northern Ireland’s largest independent bus and coach companies. Enterprise Equity has acquired Chambers Coach Hire for an undisclosed sum.

Chambers Coach Hire was established as a taxi service in 1967 by Derry-based businessman Des Chambers. Chambers remains with the business as an adviser following the sale of his shares.

Post-completion, Enterprise’s Craig Holmes joins Chambers’ board as a non-executive director. Ted Hesketh, a former managing director of Translink, will become Chambers’ chairman.

Chambers, which has a fleet of more than 100 vehicles, is on target for a £7 million turnover in the current financial year. The company has 65 full-time employees and is planning to add a further 30 drivers to its business.

The business operates coaches, mini-buses and limousines across Ireland. It runs routes for Translink, the integrated public transport operation of Citybus, NI Railways and Ulsterbus, including its Dublin to Belfast route.

It also manages a new door-to-door transport service for the elderly and people with disabilities on behalf of the NI Department for Regional Development.
