SMEs 'not as green as they want to be'
Small and medium-sized enterprises are not able to be 'as green as they want to be', according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
Whether businesses are green or not depends on what sector they are in, says the senior spokesman for the FSB Andrew Cave.
But many firms have to meet recycling criteria which can be difficult for some companies.
Cave comments that a 'lack of information' from the government on ways to recycle makes meeting green targets more difficult.
'We hear a lot about government initiatives and a lot of regulation linked to environmental issues but it is not often communicated to small businesses in a way that makes it easy for them to understand how to comply,' he says.
He also believes that it is difficult for small businesses to recycle if their local authorities do not offer the appropriate facilities to do so.
According to the Co-op bank's Ethical Consumerism Report in 2007, a company's green credentials were important to a third of customers.
